1. Overview
Restart is Abaqus’s built-in “resume from breakpoint” mechanism — it reads the data of a completed job and then continues the calculation from a specific increment of a specified analysis step, without having to start from scratch. It is almost an essential technique for scenarios such as large-scale nonlinear analysis and long computation time cases.
Common scenarios are as follows:
(1) Unexpected interruption recovery: power outage, system crash, disk full, manual kill, reaching max increments termination.
(2) Multi-load case reuse: preloading is calculated only once, followed by multiple different subsequent load cases (typical scenario: multi-load case analysis with pre-stress).
(3) Data transfer between solvers: data transfer between Abaqus/Standard and Abaqus/Explicit (typical scenario: springback analysis).
2. Usage Method
(1) Specify restart output: Whether for implicit or explicit analysis, restart output needs to be specified. By default, implicit analysis does not output restart files. (The figure below means: output restart file for each frame, no overwrite)

(2) Read restart file: Specify to start reading from a certain analysis step and a certain increment. A common scenario is to start reading from the last frame of an analysis step (The figure below means: start reading from the last increment of Step-1).

(3) Submit restart analysis: Similar to regular submission, create a job, but note that you need to select Restart.

When it comes to transferring results between explicit and implicit analysis, you need to use a predefined field to define the restart read position (The figure below means: start reading from the last increment of the last analysis step of Job-1).

All the above definitions provide corresponding keyword versions. For details, please refer to the help documentation, which can be accessed via the original link.
3. Notes
(1) In restart analysis, the analysis before the specified frame will not be recalculated;
(2) Try to keep the versions of the original analysis and restart analysis consistent, especially for explicit analysis;
(3) Some analyses do not support restart output

When performing frequency sweep analysis based on existing modal results and restart technology, the functionality is supported and the calculation works fine, but the following warning may appear.
